Army of Northern Virginia of the Sons of Confederate Veterans'
The Russell Darden Scholarship

The Army of Northern Virginia of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is proud to present its annual scholarship, the Russell Darden Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to the High School Senior submitting the best essay to this Department.  The scholarship amount will range from $500 - $2,000.
 
The essay should be between 2,000-2,500 words and reflective of the declared topic. Entries should include the essay, applicant's contact information, and contact information of the college or university attending upon graduation. All entries for 2017 should be postmarked no later than August 1, 2017, amd submitted by mail to the ANV Commander, Ronnie S. Roach and the ANV Councilman, Terry M. Klima, at the addresses shown below.

The 2017 essay subject should cover the concept of the Commerce Raiders of the Confederate States Navy. Your essay should begin with the formation of the Commerce Raiders as envisioned by Raphael Semmes and CSA Secretary of the Navy, Stephen Mallory. Give your thoughts on the effectiveness of the ships designated as Commerce Raiders, their impact on the War for Southern Independence, and the after-war consequences of their accomplishments.

Additionally, the deadline for the 2018 Russell Darden Scholarship is August 1, 2018. The 2018 essay subject will be the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley. Your essay should begin with the tragic history of the first successful submarine attack and cover the advanced engineering, technology and innovations involved in the submersible's construction. What impact has the Hunley made on military history.
