Army of Northern Virginia of the Sons of Confederate Veterans'
The Russell Darden Scholarship

The Army of Northern Virginia of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is proud to present its annual scholarship, the Russell Darden Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to the High School Senior submitting the best essay to this Department.  The scholarship amount is approximately $2,000.
The essay should be between 2,000-2,500 words and reflective of the declared topic. Entries should include the essay, applicant's contact information, and contact information of the college or university attending upon graduation. All entries should be postmarked no later than June 3rd.

As we enter the 4th year of the sesquicentennial this year's essay subject should cover the 4th year of the War, that critical period from July of 1863 to July of 1864. Beginning with the loss at Gettysburg and the fall of Vicksburg, continuing with this down turn from the glorious victories from earlier in the War. It is at this point that the sad possibility of a loss of the War becomes a reality. As you write your essay, use your own thoughts and judgment as to how to cover this period.

I hope this gives those submitting essays some ideas of what is expected. This is just a very limited outline of things to be covered when writing of this time frame of the war.

I look forward to reading your essays and awarding the scholarship to the author of the winning essay.
