Greetings, As titular head of the Army of Northern Virginia, I recognize that there may be more of a responsibility in leading this particular army than that of the other two armies. I make this statement because of the history of the Army of Northern Virginia which was the most successful of all Confederate forces during the War Between the States. Led by supremely capable leaders such as Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Wade Hampton and J.E.B. Stuart, in the annals of American history, no army fought as fiercely or as confidently against greater odds than the Army of Northern Virginia. I feel safe to say the soldiers of the Army of Northern Virginia constituted the greatest infantry in American military history. Many of our present day Sons of Confederate Veterans members have ancestors who fought at bloodbaths such as Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Spotsylvania Court House and Petersburg. I invite all who are interested in honoring their Confederate ancestors and learning more about American history to join the Sons of Confederate Veterans by visiting our website at www.scv.org. I would remind you that we are not “a history club”. By joining the Sons of Confederate Veterans, you will become a member of an organization which is very modern in its mission. On April 25, 1906, at a meeting of the United Confederate Veterans in New Orleans, Louisiana, Lt. General Stephen D. Lee gave what is today known as “The Charge” to the fledgling Sons of Confederate Veterans. “To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish. Remember, it is your duty to see the true history of the South is presented to future generations.” General Lee said it would be our responsibility to uphold the honor of the Confederate veterans who fought so bravely against unbelievable odds. The Charge makes us more than just a history loving organization. It is our duty to honor the memory and principles of these brave men by setting the record straight when challenged by the media, governmental entities and revisionist historians who would distort their motivations and demean their flags and symbols. The Sons of Confederate Veterans stand for many things but the main thing is to stand up for the good name of the Confederate soldier. It is a duty which we take very seriously. The fight against modern day political correctness, a term coined in the Soviet Union, is a very challenging fight which the Sons of Confederate Veterans must be ever vigilant. The South is rapidly losing her history. We are one of the few groups who are willing to fight to present an accurate historical account of what really happened during the period 1860-1865. This will become increasingly important as the country heads into the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War. This national celebration will give the Sons of Confederate Veterans a wonderful opportunity to be a key contributor to the upcoming national debate. I promise that as Army of Northern Virginia Commander, the Sons of Confederate Veterans will honor the South's fighting men and women. We will welcome a spirited and lively debate over such varied themes as public recognition of Confederate flags and symbols, the legality of secession, and the enduring issue of slavery in America and its aftermath. Welcome to the website of the Army of Northern Virginia and to the Sons of Confederate Veterans. We are truly a modern organization and are looking for a few good men.
Brag Bowling, Commander |
